What is DNS?

DNS is the system that turns a name like google.com into the numeric IP address your computer actually connects to. Each record type answers a different question: A and AAAA give IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, MX points to mail servers, NS lists the domain's nameservers, TXT carries verification and SPF data, CNAME aliases one name to another. A DNS lookup tells you what the public internet currently believes about a domain — useful for debugging email delivery, verifying ownership records, or tracing CDN routing.
