What is a ping test?
Ping sends a small packet to a target host and measures how long it takes to come back. The round-trip time, reported in milliseconds, tells you how responsive the connection between two machines is. Consistent low values (under 30 ms to a nearby server) point to a healthy path; spikes or packet loss usually mean network congestion, routing trouble, or a slow last mile. Ping uses ICMP, which some hosts block at the firewall — a non-response doesn't always mean the host is down.
